Usually the first thing we all do when we smell something bad in our home is to reach for the spray can of Febreze, turn on the wax warmer, or light a scented candle. While these options work for a short time it doesn’t fix the underlying cause of the odor. Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes to making your home both sanitary and smell good at the same time. Here are 16 ways I found to keep my house clean and fresh.

Wash Blankets, Linens, and Other Soft Surfaces

Anything fabric in your house from blankets, furniture upholstery, to curtains and tablecloths, they will all get dirty and hold allergens, dirt, and smells. One of the best ways to keep the house smelling fresh is to keep everything washed.

  1. Change out hand towels and bath towels daily. If a towel is used too often it will start to smell and grow bacteria. My favorite laundry detergent to keep towels smelling fresh is ARM & HAMMER Plus OxiClean Odor Blasters Fresh Burst, Liquid Laundry Detergent. Click link to see on Amazon.
  2. Wash pet beds weekly. I wash my dog’s beds once a week to keep the house from smelling like a dog. They love to be clean too and the more you clean, the more the dogs will smell clean. Try avoiding fabric softener and other scent boosters for pet beds. The added fragrances can cause allergic reactions to some pets and make allergies worse. I tried a Downy fabric softener and one of my dogs broke out in hives. All free and clear laundry detergent is hypoallergenic and safe for pets and people with sensitive skin. I use this for my dogs and use it to wash silk and never had a problem with it.  Click link to view on Amazon, All Liquid Laundry Detergent Free Clear.
  3.  Wash your bed clothes once a week to prevent buildup from sweat, dead skin cells, and dust mites. Washing them at least once a week will also help if you have allergies or certain skin conditions. I use Arm and Hammer laundry detergent for my bedding because it gives it a nice clean feel and scent.
  4. Wash fabric shower curtains and regular window curtains every 4-6months. Curtains just hang there and collect dust, hair, and everything else floating in the air. I like to wash them and hang them up wet because as they dry they make the house smell fresh! Laundry scent boosters make the curtains smell clean longer. I love ARM & HAMMER Odor Blasters In-Wash Scent Booster. Click link to view on Amazon.
  5. Wash fabric table cloths. I try to wash and change my table cloths at least once a month. Everything ends up on the kitchen table so that’s a lot of dirt moving around.
  6. Rugs and carpet. I love rugs that I can throw in the washer. I do not currently have carpet in my house but I do remember having it growing up. I remember my mom shampooing the carpets and it made the whole house smell clean. Carpets and runs can hold a lot of dirt, grime, and dust mites so it’s very important to vacuum regularly and keep them clean. Especially for allergy sufferers.
  7.  Furniture upholstery. Upholstery traps everything that touches it. Using a carpet and upholstery cleaner like the BISSELL Little Green Mini Portable Carpet and Upholstery Deep Cleaner can keep your furniture clean. Click link to view on Amazon.

Wipe Down and Clean Hard Surfaces

  1. Clean the floors regularly. I try to vacuum the floors every other day to keep the dog hair and dirt they track in from piling up. Mopping the floors at least once a week keeps the house smelling clean.
  2. Wipe down the walls and clean the baseboards. Cleaning the walls sounds like it could be a never ending job but the truth is it doesn’t take me that long with the mop I use. Before Mopping the floors I usually run the mop over the walls. It keeps the dust down and makes the house feel extra clean. I love my mop! 3. Wipe down kitchen and bathroom counters, tables and other hard surface furniture regularly. Dirt, hair, dust mites, and dead skin cells float around and land on these surfaces. Keeping them shiny will ensure they are always clean. And don’t forget to wipe down the cabinets for a better clean!
  4. Vacuuming the ceiling not only makes the home look and feel cleaner and it keeps the dust from falling to your clean floors after turning a fan on. I use the brush attachment with my vacuum to go over the ceiling. Remember, when you clean start from the top and work your way down. Click here to view my vacuum on Amazon: Shark HV322 Rocket Pet Plus Corded Stick Vacuum with LED Headlights.

Other Forgotten Areas that Can Make Your Home Smell Bad

  1. The refrigerator. If you leave old food in the refrigerator too long it can start to smell and then the refrigerator itself will start to smell. I try to clean out the refrigerator once a week (Sometimes it turns into a month). Keeping the shelves wiped down and making sure nothing leaks helps with smells. I keep a container of baking soda with holes in the lid in the back to help absorb bad smells.  Click here to view Arm & Hammer Baking Soda on Amazon.
  2. Trash cans. Plastic trash cans will absorb the odors of stinky things placed in them. I’m guilty of not cleaning mine like I should but wiping them down and letting them sit in the sun for a day helps keep them from smelling bad. I put baking soda in the bottom to help with odors too.
  3. Pipes. Kitchen and bathroom drains can accumulate build up of soap scum, hair, grease, and everything else dumped down them. I pour drain no down the drains every 4-6 months to keep them from clogging up. Keeping the traps cleaned and using a drain strainer will keep large particles from going down.  Click here to view the Drano I use on Amazon: Drano Max Gel Drain Clog Remover and Cleaner for Shower or Sink Drains.
  4. The washing machine. Yes, if you don’t wash your washing machine with a washing machine cleaner it will start to smell. After so many loads of laundry bacteria and soap scum can start to build up causing not just the washer to smell bad but your laundry as well. I use the Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner. I’ve tried other brands but always go back to Affresh. Click here to view Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner on Amazon. I do not have a dishwasher or garbage disposal(as my husband would say we have a dishwasher and then points to me!) But these are two other appliances that should be cleaned to keep unwanted smells away . Affresh has dishwasher tablets and garbage disposal tablets as well. Clink links to view on Amazon.
  5.  Filters! Wherever there is a filter in your home eventually it will need to be cleaned or replaced. HVAC, air purifier, window air conditioner, heaters, microwave, hood vent, water filters, dryer lint filter, dishwasher, vacuums, and many more. They all need to be cleaned for many reasons, for efficiency, life of the product, keeping the home smelling fresh, and overall better performance.

Keeping a clean and fresh smelling house doesn’t have to be stressful. I know this was a lot of information and chores but the key is giving yourself grace to not be perfect, make a cleaning schedule and stick to it, and remember a lot of these can be spaced out throughout the year.
