Stand at the Door like Jesus

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Revelation 3:20 NIV

Over the past several days, I’ve felt deeply disappointed by the way people have responded within different communities around me. We’ve had a lot of ice and snow, and for many, simply walking out of the house has been difficult. Getting vehicles out has been nearly impossible unless someone breaks through the ice and shovels it away.

I’ve seen many people asking for help with snow removal on social media, and sadly, a lot of the responses in the comments have been downright nasty. I wish I were in a position to help more but I feel like God wants this message heard.

I can’t help but think about all the churches in every community and wonder why more don’t organize efforts like this… members with tractors clearing driveways, or youth groups shoveling sidewalks. I can’t imagine a better representation of Jesus reaching people. Jesus didn’t sit inside a building waiting for people to come to Him; He went out and met them where they were.

He stands at our door and knocks, and I’m confident that if we were snowed in, He’d be standing there with a snow shovel when we opened the door. What better way to share the gospel than to go door to door and offer help in Christ’s name?

I know some people would be offended and quick to offer excuses. I’m just thankful that my shortcomings didn’t offend Jesus so much that He came up with excuses not to help me.

You don’t have to shovel snow to serve others, you could simply call a neighbor and ask how they’re doing or if they need anything. You don’t have to go to church to be the church.

Lord Jesus, thank You for standing at the door of our hearts and knocking with patience, grace, and love. Forgive us for the times we’ve been too busy, too distracted, or too comfortable to open the door—not only to You, but to those around us who need help. Soften our hearts to see the needs in our communities and give us willing hands to serve without expecting anything in return. Help us to be the church outside the walls, reflecting Your love through simple acts of kindness. Teach us to meet people where they are, just as You meet us every day. May our lives point others to You in all we do. In Your precious name, amen.
