“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
Finding Rest in Jesus When Life Feels Overwhelming | Matthew 11:28 Devotional

Imagine trying to carry armfuls of heavy bags everywhere you go. Eventually your arms give out. You become exhausted and wonder how you will keep going. Each week you pick up more to carry, starting Monday morning and watching the finish line on Friday get closer and closer. But the more we add to our bags each week, the farther that finish line seems to move away.
Many of us live this way spiritually—holding responsibilities, worries, expectations, and fear all at once. We tell ourselves, “Just one more task and then I can rest.” Yet the list never seems to end.
Coming to Jesus means admitting, “I can’t carry this alone.” We were never meant to carry the whole world ourselves. God often provides people in our lives to lean on during hard seasons, but more importantly, He invites us to walk beside Him.
In biblical times, a yoke connected two animals pulling a load together. When Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you,” He is offering something very different from the burdens we carry alone.
You don’t pull the weight by yourself.
He walks with you.
He carries the heavier side.
He gives you relief.
He gives you rest.
Even the land understands this rhythm.
A field cannot produce constantly. It needs seasons of rest. Farmers have long allowed land to lie fallow so the soil can recover and grow strong again. Yet many of us treat our lives like land that must produce every single day.
Jesus invites us into a different rhythm—one where work, rest, and trust exist together.
He does not shame the weary.
He calls them closer.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
The answer to exhaustion is not trying harder, but walking beside the One who carries the load with us.
Lay down the heavy bags you were never meant to carry.
Place them at His feet, and rest your weary arms in His.
Reflection Questions:
1. What burdens or worries have you been carrying that you need to bring to Jesus?
2. In what ways do you feel pressure to constantly produce or stay busy?
3. What might it look like for you to accept Jesus’ invitation to rest this week?
4. How can trusting God change the way you approach your responsibilities?
Dear Lord, You see the weight I carry and the exhaustion that sometimes fills my heart. I confess that I often try to handle everything on my own, forgetting that You have invited me to walk beside You. Help me to lay down the burdens I was never meant to carry. Teach me to trust You with my worries, my responsibilities, and the things that feel overwhelming. Remind me that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Give my soul the rest that only You can provide. Help me to live in the rhythm of work, rest, and trust that You designed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
