One cool April day in 2021, I was home alone with Charlie and Sarah when my dad Martin showed up at my front door with two beagle puppies.
For many months David and I discussed getting a third dog just so Sarah wouldn’t be home alone when we took Charlie to the vet. At this point in time we only had Sarah for a year and trying to walk Charlie when we couldn’t get a leash on Sarah was difficult since Sarah didn’t like being alone.
We thought the best answer was another dog so that way there would always be two dogs at home.
My dad let me play with the two puppies and I was infatuated with both of them. I absolutely love beagles and couldn’t get enough puppy breath and kisses.
Before dad left he said, “If you want one, keep it.” Of course I was going to keep one! I kept the one that dad named Bandit. Since my childhood beagle was named Bandit I decided to call him Bj as a compromise and that is how Bj came into our lives.
About a year later I found out that dad didn’t actually think I would keep one of the puppies which is why he went and got a third puppy for the other one he had with him that day.
Having Bj was a reminder of why I only had four legged babies. Waking up with him every hour was exhausting and made me thankful that puppies age faster than children. I loved him so much but he was a handful!
I believe Sarah was a mom at some point in her life. Her maternal instincts took over and she knew exactly how to care for Bj.
When Charlie died, Sarah and Bj became closer and wherever one was the other wasn’t far behind. However, Bj being a young puppy was too much for Sarah to handle all the time. We were back to only two dogs. So, once again we started searching for another puppy to keep up with Bj’s energy and give Sarah some company when we took Bj out.
Not long after we went to the same animal shelter we got Sarah from. I wasn’t planning on another puppy but they showed us a little black puppy that was hard to resist.
Bj is the only boy in the house and loves his sisters. I’m thankful for the day dad brought Bj into our lives. Bj’s favorite time of day is when he can play ball and swim in the creek.
Every house needs the howling echo of a happy hound bouncing off the walls and into the hearts of everyone living there.
