For weeks every time I sat in my recliner I looked up at the living room ceiling fan covered in dust from months of me putting off cleaning it. The globes had a sticky layer of brown dust and dog hair dimming the light trying to shine through them. The blades were coated with grimy dirt. Cobwebs had formed from the beam and reached down attaching to the base of the fan and gave it an unsettling appearance.
I started wiping down the fan blades and couldn’t believe how dirty they got in just three months. After scrubbing, dusting, polishing, and washing the globes I reassembled the fan. I took a moment to stand back and admire the shiny black metal and glowing wood features. The once brown covered globes were crystal clear and the light shined so bright that I couldn’t stand to look directly at it. It looked like a brand-new ceiling fan!
In that moment the Holy Spirit said people are the same way. We work and go round and round without realizing months have gone by without being washed in the blood of Jesus and renewing our spirit. Dirt and grime from the world build up in our hearts and dim the lights in our eyes making it harder to see.
Jesus said in Matthew 5: 14-16, “You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (NIV).
We should make it a habit to cleanse and renew our faith daily. Asking God for forgiveness and start each morning with a clean slate. Only then can he make us clean so the light of his spirit shines through us clearly.
1 John 1:9 says, ” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (NIV).
I know if I clean the ceiling fan more frequently each time will take less and less time to clean. The same goes for us, the more we read God’s word and ask for forgiveness, the less and less time it will take to see a difference in our lives. Ask God today to cleanse your heart and renew your spirit so you can let his light shine from your life.
