Looking Through the Storm

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to focus on what isn’t going right?

One inconvenience turns into frustration. One unanswered prayer overshadows ten answered ones. One difficult season becomes all we can see.

It’s a little like standing so close to a single tree that you miss the beauty of the entire forest.

I remember driving through the mountains after a heavy rain. Low clouds hung over the ridges, hiding the peaks I’d come to admire. If I hadn’t known they were there, I might have assumed the mountains had disappeared altogether.

But they hadn’t moved.

The clouds simply blocked my view.

Life can do the same thing.

Pain, financial struggles, loneliness, disappointment, health problems, broken relationships, or uncertainty can become like thick clouds covering our vision. They are real. They are heavy. They deserve our attention. But if we’re not careful, they can become the only thing we see.

When our circumstances fill our field of vision, it’s easy to overlook the blessings quietly surrounding us.

A faithful spouse.

The laughter of a child.

A loyal dog waiting by the door.

A warm cup of coffee.

Food on the table.

A Bible within reach.

Another sunrise.

Another opportunity to pray.

None of these blessings erase our hardships, but they remind us that God has not stopped providing simply because life has become difficult.

I’ve met people who had very little yet overflowed with gratitude. I’ve also met people who had more than they could ever need but struggled to find joy because all they could see was what they lacked.

Contentment has never depended on our circumstances. It depends on where we choose to place our attention.

The enemy would love for us to become so consumed with what we don’t have that we forget everything God has already given us.

Gratitude doesn’t deny hardship.

It simply refuses to let hardship tell the whole story.

The Apostle Paul understood this well. He wrote about rejoicing while facing imprisonment, persecution, hunger, and uncertainty. His circumstances were difficult, but his eyes remained fixed on Christ rather than on what surrounded him.

Perhaps today isn’t about pretending everything is fine.

Perhaps it’s simply about asking God to help us see beyond the clouds.

The mountain is still there.

And so are His blessings.

Sometimes all we need is for God to gently lift our eyes.

Reflection Questions:

1. What difficulty has been occupying most of your thoughts lately?

2. What are three blessings in your life that you’ve overlooked because your focus has been on your circumstances?

3. How can practicing gratitude help you trust God more deeply during this season?

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for remaining faithful even when life’s storms make it difficult to see Your goodness. Forgive me for the times I become so focused on my problems that I overlook the countless blessings You’ve placed around me. Open my eyes to recognize Your provision each day, even in the middle of difficult circumstances. Help me develop a grateful heart that trusts You whether life is easy or hard. May my attention remain fixed on You rather than on my fears. Thank You for never leaving me and for reminding me that Your blessings are still present, even when clouds fill the sky. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
