The other night, I looked up at a perfectly clear sky.
There were no clouds hiding the view, no moon bright enough to wash everything else away—just darkness stretched farther than my eyes could see, filled with millions of tiny stars sparkling against it.
And for a moment, I simply stood there.
The longer I looked, the smaller I felt.
Not insignificant—just wonderfully small.
I began thinking about heaven, and a thought settled quietly into my heart:
If God can make the darkness look this beautiful from here, I wonder how beautiful it must be on the other side.
We usually think of darkness as something to escape. Darkness represents the seasons we don’t understand, the prayers that haven’t been answered, the grief we carry, and the roads ahead that we cannot see.
Yet that night, darkness wasn’t ugly.
It was breathtaking.
Without the darkness, I wouldn’t have been able to see the stars nearly as clearly.
Maybe there is a lesson hidden there.
Some of God’s beauty becomes most visible when life grows dark.
It is often during our hardest seasons that we discover how faithfully He holds us. We notice the small mercies we once overlooked. A Scripture suddenly feels written directly for us. A friend’s kindness means more than it ever did before. A quiet prayer becomes more precious than a thousand easy words.
The darkness didn’t create the stars.
It simply made their light easier to see.
And perhaps our difficult seasons sometimes do the same with God.
They don’t create His goodness. His goodness was there all along. But when everything else grows dim, we begin noticing the light that has always been shining.
Standing beneath that sky also reminded me how little of God’s creation I can actually see.
Those stars looked like tiny pinpoints from where I stood, yet many of them are unimaginably vast. Distance makes enormous things appear small.
Maybe eternity is a little like that from where we stand now.
We see only glimpses.
A promise in Scripture. A moment of peace. A sunset that stops us in our tracks. The sound of someone we love laughing. A mountain covered in morning fog. A sky overflowing with stars.
Little glimpses of beauty that make our hearts ache for something more.
Scripture tells us that what God has prepared is beyond what we can fully imagine. We spend our lives seeing creation from this side of eternity, looking through human eyes and understanding only a fraction of what God sees.
And still—look how beautiful He made this side.
He painted stars across the darkness.
He gave mountains their silhouettes against the evening sky.
He taught rivers to reflect moonlight and morning light to spill across the earth.
And all of this is part of a creation that Scripture tells us is waiting to be made new.
So I wonder…
If the view from here can leave us speechless, what will it be like when there is nothing separating us from the fullness of God’s presence?
Perhaps that’s why certain moments in nature stir something so deep inside us. Maybe beauty is sometimes God’s gentle reminder that this world is not the end of the story.
Tonight, if you find yourself beneath a dark sky, look up.
Don’t only notice the darkness.
Look for the light scattered through it.
And if you’re walking through your own kind of darkness right now, remember this:
Darkness does not mean God has stopped creating beauty.
There are things He is doing beyond what you can presently see.
And someday, when we finally see from the other side, I imagine we will discover that even the most beautiful night sky we ever stood beneath was only a tiny glimpse of what God had waiting for us all along.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beauty You have placed all around us and for the little glimpses of Your glory hidden in ordinary moments. When life feels dark, help me remember that darkness cannot extinguish Your light. Teach me to look beyond what I can see and trust what You are preparing beyond my understanding. And when I look toward the heavens, remind me that the God who placed every star in the sky also holds my life securely in His hands. Until the day I see You face to face, help me walk faithfully by the light You give me today.
