“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?”
Job 38:16 NIV

Have you ever watched a fish swim in a bowl and wondered if it knows there’s more?
Does it know about the depths of the ocean… the valleys hidden beneath the waves?
Does it know how far the waters stretch, or how much life exists beyond what it can see?
Or does it believe that its small glass world is all there is?
Sometimes, I wonder if we live the same way.
We move through life focused on what’s right in front of us—our routines, our responsibilities, our worries. We circle the same thoughts, the same expectations, the same limitations… until our world begins to feel small, contained, and familiar.
Like a bowl.
We don’t always notice the walls…
but they are there—
in our fears,
in our doubts,
in the quiet ways we tell ourselves, this is enough… this is all there is.
But God…
God is not like the bowl.
He is like the ocean—vast, deep, and alive in ways we cannot fully understand.
The surface doesn’t reveal the depths below.
Beneath it are hidden places full of movement and life—currents that shift, colors that shimmer, and wonders still undiscovered. Around every corner there is something new. In every depth, something unseen.
And His love is just as deep.
Not shallow. Not still. Not limited. It stretches farther than we can imagine and reaches deeper than we can comprehend. We could spend a lifetime exploring it and never find the end.
And within that depth… is more.
More than the life we’ve settled into.
More than the limits we’ve accepted.
More than the small space we’ve learned to stay within.
Yet how often do we remain in the bowl?
We tell ourselves:
“This is just where I am.”
“This is all I can do.”
“This is all my life will be.”
We stay where it feels safe… even if it feels small.
But God is always calling us beyond what we can see.
He invites us into a life not confined by fear or familiarity, but opened wide by faith. A life where His plans stretch beyond our understanding, where new paths unfold, and where opportunities we never imagined begin to appear.
What if the life you see right now… isn’t the whole picture?
What if beyond the edges of your comfort, there is an ocean of purpose waiting?
Our vision may be limited—
but God’s is not. And when we begin to trust Him, the glass walls we once lived within begin to fade. What felt like the only way becomes just the beginning. What felt small begins to open, widen, and deepen.
He is not a God of stagnant water.
He is living, moving, endless.
And He is inviting you—
not to stay where it is safe…
but to step into something deeper.
You were never made for the world’s bowl.
You were made to swim in the Lord’s ocean.
Reflection Questions:
1. Where have I allowed my thinking or faith to become limited?
2. What “bowl” might God be asking me to step out of?
3. Do I trust that God has more for me than what I can currently see?
Dear Lord, Thank You that Your ways are higher and deeper than anything I can understand. Forgive me for the times I’ve settled into what feels safe instead of trusting You for more. Break down the walls I’ve placed around my life and help me to see beyond what is right in front of me. Give me courage to step into the unknown, trusting that You are already there. Teach me to live in the fullness of Your love and to walk boldly into the opportunities You place before me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
