From Depletion to Life: Finding Life in Jesus

“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinner.”

Mark 2:17 ESV

In nature, life depends on the right conditions. Pure, distilled water—stripped of all minerals—cannot sustain life. Soil that has been depleted of nutrients cannot grow anything, no matter how much you plant.

Life requires something within it to flourish.

In a similar way, our hearts—on our own—are not naturally full of life. Without Jesus, we are spiritually empty, lacking what we need to truly live and grow. But unlike soil or water, the issue isn’t just that we are lacking… it’s that we are broken by sin.

And yet, this is where grace steps in.

It’s often in the moment we recognize our sin, our weakness, our inability to fix ourselves, that we finally turn to Jesus. Not because sin is good—but because it reveals our need for a Savior.

Jesus didn’t come for the perfect. He came for the weary, the messy, the ones who know they need help.

Your sin is not what sustains you. It’s not what gives you life.

But it can be the very thing that humbles your heart enough to lead you to the One who does.

Just like soil must be restored with nutrients to grow, our hearts must be filled with Christ to truly live. And the beautiful truth is—He doesn’t wait for you to clean yourself up first.

He meets you right where you are… and begins to make you new.

Reflection Questions:

1. Have I been trying to “fix” myself before coming to Jesus?

2. Do I see my sin as something to hide—or something that reveals my need for Him?

3. What would it look like to let Jesus restore the empty places in my heart?

Lord, I come to You just as I am—broken, imperfect, and in need of You. Thank You for not turning away from my sin, but instead using it to draw me closer to Your heart. Help me not to hide my struggles, but to bring them honestly before You. Fill what is empty in me. Restore what is worn out. And remind me that true life is found in You alone. In Jesus name, amen.
