Layer by Layer | Built on Christ the Cornerstone

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”

Ephesians 2:19–20 ESV

The past few days, I’ve been helping my husband finish a basement he’s been transforming. The walls were framed. The sheetrock was hung. Now it was time to plaster… something I could help with.

As I filled each tiny screw hole, I couldn’t help but think about how God works in us. Each dent.

Each flaw. Each place that needs smoothing.

We come to Him just as we are… cracked, scarred, unfinished. Yet He doesn’t discard us. He patches us. He wipes us clean. He makes us new.

Like a fresh piece of sheetrock being secured into place, we are fastened to something greater than ourselves. We are built into His kingdom, not randomly, but intentionally. And Christ is the cornerstone holding it all together.

Layer after layer, God coats us with His Word. He refines us through correction, conviction, grace, and growth. Sometimes the sanding feels uncomfortable. Sometimes the smoothing feels like pressure. But it is all part of the process of strengthening us.

And even after the “final coat of paint,” life still happens.

We get scraped. We get dented. We get scuffed. Sometimes we even feel like holes have been punched straight through our hearts.

But God is not finished.

With His mercy, He repairs.

With His grace, He restores.

With His love, He rebuilds.

We are only one piece of His heavenly structure, but we are an important piece. And the One who started the work is faithful to keep restoring us, layer by layer.

Ask yourself…

1. What “dents” or “holes” in your life need God’s repair right now?

2. Have you been resisting the sanding and smoothing process in a certain area?

3. How does knowing Christ is your cornerstone change the way you view your struggles?

4. In what ways have you already seen God patch and restore you in the past?

Dear God, Thank You for meeting me in my unfinished places. Thank You for not discarding me when I am cracked or worn. You are my Cornerstone — steady, strong, and unmovable. Smooth the rough edges in my heart. Fill the holes left by pain. Sand away what does not belong and build me into something that reflects You. Layer my life with Your Word and secure me firmly in Your truth. When life leaves dents and scars, remind me that You are always near, restoring and renewing me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
