It was a summer afternoon and I was sitting in my recliner drinking my coffee and scrolling through Facebook. I scrolled upon an urgent post from an animal shelter that was desperate to find three dogs a home before they were euthanized.
One of the dogs was a blue/gray pitbull named Sasha. I showed David her picture and we started the conversation about if we could handle another dog. The conversation died down and we went about the rest of our day.
Many hours passed until David randomly asked me what I was thinking about. I told him I couldn’t get that dog out of my head. All day I just kept thinking about how she would die if no one adopted her. David to my surprise said he had been thinking about her all day too and asked if we should go get her. I picked up my phone and sent the shelter a message to find out if Sasha was still available. Not long after that they responded and said to come out to meet her.
Since we were getting her for Mabel we loaded Mabel up in the car so she could go and approve Sasha. When we got to the shelter and Mabel started to freak out. She didn’t like any of the smells or loud noises in the background. We got her into the meet and greet pen where we eagerly waited for Sasha to appear.
They brought this dirty, scruffy, gray dog outside and she ran up to us and Mabel without hesitation. We watched Sasha follow Mabel around the pen but Mabel was more interested in getting back to the car.
After thinking it went well and that we wanted Sasha, the staff informed us that they had to meet every animal we had in the home.
We had Sarah for four years and had never taken her anywhere. We told them we didn’t know if that would be possible because Sarah wouldn’t leave the house. They wouldn’t make any exceptions and said if we didn’t bring Bj and Sarah then we couldn’t adopt Sasha.
We decided we had to try because Sasha’s life depended on it. We drove Mabel home and loaded up Bj in the back seat and Sarah in the crate. The race was on because we had to make it back to the shelter before they closed at 4pm. If we didn’t do it all that day they were putting Sasha up at their adoption event the next day. If no one took her she would be euthanized the following day.
We made it back to the shelter right before closing and some of the volunteers were waiting and praying we would make it in time to save Sasha.
We thought Sarah would have trouble but she enjoyed every second of the car ride and seeing the new place. Her and Sasha were getting along great!
Poor Bj was a different story because he has terrible anxiety. He did not like that place and barked with fear the whole time. Bj’s anxiousness almost cost us the adoption because they didn’t feel comfortable with him. We explained he only acted that way because we had to bring him and he didn’t act like that at home.
Eventually the lady in charge agreed to let us adopt Sasha.
As we left the shelter with Bj and Sarah our car battery died and we were stranded on the side of the road. I felt like the devil was trying really hard that day to keep us from saving Sasha.
One of the volunteers from the shelter stopped to help us and let us put the dogs in her car with the air conditioning. It was in the high 80s and the dogs were panting.
I called my sister Britni to help us get a new car battery. Thankfully she answered! Although so many things went wrong that day God sent many people to help and get us home.
Morning came and it was time to go rescue Sasha. We loaded up one of the dog crates in the car and started the long drive to the shelter.
When we arrived, we went into a small waiting room and waited for someone to bring Sasha out. I remember thinking that Mabel was going to be so happy. They brought Sasha out and with light in her eyes I could tell she knew that she was getting a home.
David took her leash and walked her to the car, opened the hatch and without hesitation she jumped in the crate. We started down the road and when I looked behind my seat all I saw was Sasha’s big blocky head grinning ear to ear. She was free from the bad place! (The shelter and people were great. I just know it was the bad place to her).
We got her home and before we took her inside, we decided to walk her to the creek behind our house. She was filthy and smelled up the whole car.
It was her first time seeing a creek and she ran straight into the water then dunked her whole head and started blowing bubbles. We took her to the house and gave her a bath where all of the old dead fur came off and she emerged a new shiny clean dog.
Mabel and Sasha have bonded very well together and love playing with each other. she is exactly what Mabel needed. Bj who wasn’t fond of Sasha now adores her and keeps her groomed.
Sasha loves sleeping in recliners, blowing bubbles in the creek, and laying in the chewy boxes after the dog food is delivered.
All four of the dogs have formed a lasting bond and love each other very much. Sasha completes our pack and brings so much personality to our lives.
