The Harvest | God Sees the Heart, Not the Outward Appearance

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

Today I was working in my yard, trying to start my garden. I’ve been wanting to try container gardening to see if it would be any easier on my back. I planted potatoes in laundry baskets and drink crates, and onions and carrots in grow bags.

When I finished, I stepped back and felt so much joy looking at what would be the start of a great harvest.

To anyone else, the sight of baskets, plastic crates, buckets, and recycled containers might make them question my design choices. It didn’t look polished or picture-perfect. But to me, all I could think about was what they contained.

They would produce food to feed my family.

With my own hands, I planted the future.

As I stuck my hands into the bags of soil, I thought about the moment God sent Samuel to find the future king of Israel. What looked ordinary—even overlooked—on the outside held something powerful within.

That’s how God sees us.

The world may focus on appearances, status, or how “put together” things look. But God is not concerned with the outward packaging. He is looking at what’s planted inside—the faith, the obedience, the willingness to grow.

Just like those simple containers in my garden, what matters most is what they will produce.

And in the same way, your life—no matter how it may look to others—has been planted with purpose. God sees the harvest that’s coming, even when others only see the container.

So don’t be discouraged if you feel overlooked, underestimated, or not quite “enough” by the world’s standards.

Keep growing. Keep planting seeds of faith.

Because God isn’t measuring your outward appearance—He’s preparing your harvest.

Reflection Questions:

1. Have I been focusing too much on outward appearances—either my own or others’?

2. What is God growing inside of me in this season?

3. In what ways can I trust God with the “harvest” He is preparing in my life?

Dear Lord, thank You for seeing beyond what others see. You know my heart, my struggles, and the seeds You’ve planted within me. Help me not to compare myself to the world’s standards, but to trust in the work You are doing inside of me. Strengthen my faith as I grow, and remind me that You are preparing something beautiful in Your perfect timing. Let my life produce a harvest that honors You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
