This Is True Happiness: Learning to See God in the Small Moments

“Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 4:6 NIV

The stars shined bright against the black sky as I stood in the shadows on my back porch, listening to the creek run through the valley like a soothing lullaby. The owls and frogs took the lead in the night’s serenade, and as my eyes followed a shooting star that disappeared into nothing, I thought to myself, this is true happiness.

Happiness looks different to everyone, yet it’s something we all spend our lives chasing. We tell ourselves, if I just had that house… that car… a little more money… The list never ends—and somehow, neither does the searching.

The truth is, those big moments do bring happiness—but only for a little while. Like a shooting star, they’re exciting to see, breathtaking in the moment, and then… gone. Before we know it, we’re already chasing the next thing, often missing the quiet, steady joy that was right in front of us all along.

Later, after the chill set in, I went inside and stood by the heater, letting the warmth run through me. Watching the flame dance and feeling the heat on my face, I thought again, this is true happiness.

It wasn’t the big moment—it was the small one.

Happiness isn’t found in what we’re chasing. It’s found in what we’re living.

It’s in the first sip of coffee in the morning.

In the smell of summer air after it rains.

In the changing colors of the trees in fall.

In the warmth of a fire by the creek.

In clean sheets, fresh from the wash.

In blankets still warm from the dryer.

In meals made with your own hands.

In gardens growing, bees buzzing, and bare feet in the grass.

These small moments… they aren’t small at all.

They are gifts—placed gently throughout our days by a loving God who knew we would need them.

We’ve heard it said, it’s the journey that matters, not the destination. And here, in this life, that feels true. Because real happiness isn’t waiting somewhere ahead—it’s woven into the ordinary, the quiet, the unnoticed.

Even now, sitting wrapped in a blanket with a warm cup of tea, listening to the stillness of a sleeping house… I find myself thinking once more,

this is true happiness.

Reflection Questions:

1. What “big thing” have I been chasing for happiness?

2. What small moments have I overlooked recently?

3. When was the last time I truly slowed down and felt grateful?

4. How can I become more mindful of God’s presence in my everyday life?

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the simple, quiet moments that bring peace to my heart. Forgive me for the times I’ve chased after things that could never truly satisfy me. Help me to slow down, to be present, and to recognize the beauty You’ve placed in my everyday life. Open my eyes to the small blessings—the ones I often overlook—and remind me that true joy comes from You, not from this world. Teach me to be content, to be grateful, and to find happiness in Your presence each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
