The Porch Light Is Still On

I remember growing up in the country where our farmhouse stood alone at the end of a long driveway. At night, there were no neighboring lights shining in the distance, just darkness stretching across the fields. But one thing never changed: the porch light was always on.

No matter how late it was, that warm glow stood in the middle of the blackness, guiding us back home. It brought comfort, security, and the quiet assurance that someone was waiting for us.

Even now, when I think about that porch light, I can’t help but see a picture of God’s love.

Whether you’ve been away for a few hours or a few days, that simple light says, “Someone is expecting you. Someone wants you to come home.”

Growing up in the country, porch lights often served as more than decoration. They guided family members home after sunset, welcomed visitors, and offered a sense of security on the darkest nights. Even now, when I see a warm light shining from a porch, I can’t help but think of home.

Jesus told a story about a young man who left home and wasted everything he had. He chased his own desires, made poor choices, and eventually found himself broken, hungry, and alone. When he finally decided to return home, he expected rejection. He planned a speech. He rehearsed his apology. He was prepared to beg for mercy.

But something remarkable happened.

Before the son even reached the house, his father saw him coming.

The father wasn’t standing at the door with crossed arms waiting to lecture him. He wasn’t demanding explanations. He wasn’t keeping score of every mistake.

Instead, he ran to meet him.

That is a picture of God’s heart toward us.

So many people believe they have wandered too far, failed too much, or sinned too greatly to return to God. They imagine Him waiting with disappointment, ready to remind them of every wrong turn they’ve taken.

Yet Scripture paints a different picture.

God is not looking for reasons to keep us away. He is looking for opportunities to welcome us back.

No matter how far we’ve drifted, His grace reaches farther.

No matter how long we’ve been gone, His mercy remains.

No matter what mistakes we’ve made, the invitation still stands.

The porch light is still on.

Perhaps today you feel distant from God. Maybe life has become busy. Maybe disappointment has hardened your heart. Maybe guilt has convinced you that you don’t belong anymore.

If that’s you, remember the father in Jesus’ story.

He never stopped watching.

He never stopped hoping.

He never stopped loving.

And when his child finally turned toward home, he didn’t meet him with condemnation. He met him with compassion.

God’s love has not changed because of your failures. His invitation has not expired because of your mistakes.

The porch light is still shining.

And home is only one step of faith away.

Reflection Questions:

1. Is there an area of your life where you’ve been keeping your distance from God?

2. Have guilt or shame ever made you feel unworthy of God’s forgiveness?

3. What would it look like for you to take one step toward Him today?

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me even when I wander. Thank You for Your patience, mercy, and grace. Forgive me for the times I have drifted away and tried to carry life’s burdens on my own.

Help me remember that Your arms are always open and Your love never fails. Give me the courage to return to You daily, trusting that I will always find compassion instead of condemnation.

Thank You for being my true home.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
