The Blessings We Hardly Notice

The coffee pot sputtered to life before the sun came up. The dogs stretched and yawned as they slowly woke from sleep. The house was still quiet. Outside, the grass was covered in dew that would disappear by midmorning.

As I stood there listening to the familiar sounds of another ordinary morning, I couldn’t help but think about how many blessings God gives us that we barely notice because they seem so normal.

A warm bed.

Running water.

A faithful dog waiting to greet us.

Another sunrise.

The things we call ordinary are often extraordinary gifts we’ve simply grown used to.

I remember growing up and waking up to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen. Before my feet ever touched the floor, that familiar aroma would drift through the house. Mom and Dad always started their day with a hot cup of coffee. Looking back, it wasn’t really about the coffee. It was about the comfort, stability, and security that came with those familiar moments.

Even now, certain smells instantly bring back precious memories I had forgotten. Fresh-cut grass. Rain on a summer afternoon. Bread baking in the oven. Coffee brewing before dawn.

Those familiar smells are blessings too. They remind us of seasons of life that shaped us, people we loved, and moments God quietly gave us along the way.

So often we chase after bigger blessings while overlooking the countless small ones already surrounding us. We wait for the promotion, the answered prayer, the financial breakthrough, or the next big milestone. Meanwhile, God is filling our days with simple gifts that make life beautiful.

The noise of the world constantly tells us we need more to be happy. More money. More success. More possessions. More experiences.

Yet some of life’s greatest treasures are found in the smallest moments: a faithful spouse, a loyal dog, a quiet morning, a warm cup of coffee, a familiar smell, a peaceful home, and another day to serve the Lord.

Today, don’t rush past the small blessings looking for bigger ones.

Take time to notice them.

Thank God for them.

Because often, it’s the little things that make life worth living.

Reflection Questions:

1. What ordinary blessing have you been overlooking lately?

2. Are there familiar sights, sounds, or smells that remind you of God’s goodness in your life?

3. How can you slow down today and intentionally thank God for the simple gifts He has provided?

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the countless blessings You place in my life each day. Forgive me for the times I overlook them while searching for something bigger or better. Open my eyes to see Your goodness in the ordinary moments—the quiet mornings, the familiar comforts, the people and pets I love, and the simple gifts that fill my days.

Help me to cultivate a grateful heart that notices Your hand at work in both the big and small things. Thank You for every good and perfect gift that comes from You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
