“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”
1 Corinthians 3:6 NIV
Every gardener knows that a healthy garden begins long before the first seed is planted.
The soil must be nourished.
The weeds must be pulled.
The plants need water, sunlight, and time.
Without the right environment, even the healthiest seed struggles to grow.
Our lives aren’t much different.
The choices we make each day become the environment where our minds, bodies, and spirits either flourish or slowly wither.
The food we eat.
The thoughts we dwell on.
The amount of rest we get.
The people we surround ourselves with.
The time we spend with God.
These things matter.
God created our bodies with remarkable wisdom, and caring for them is one way we honor the gift He has given us. We shouldn’t be surprised when healthy choices often produce healthier lives.
But then… storms come.
A disease appears despite years of good habits.
An injury changes everything.
A loved one receives an unexpected diagnosis.
The faithful gardener watches hail destroy months of careful work in a single afternoon.
Sometimes we do everything we know to do, and life still hurts.
That doesn’t mean we failed.
It doesn’t mean God abandoned us.
It simply reminds us that we live in a world still waiting for complete restoration.
Our responsibility is to tend the garden.
God’s responsibility is the harvest.
We care for the soil because it’s wise.
We exercise because our bodies are gifts.
We eat well because nourishment matters.
We pray because our souls need communion with the One who created them.
Yet our hope has never rested in perfect health, perfect habits, or perfect circumstances.
Our hope rests in Christ.
Whether the garden produces an abundant harvest or endures a difficult season, the Gardener never leaves His field.
Even when storms uproot what we’ve planted, He remains faithful.
And perhaps that’s one of the greatest lessons a garden teaches us.
Healthy soil cannot stop every storm.
But deep roots can help us stand through one.
So tend the garden God has entrusted to you.
Care for your body.
Guard your heart.
Renew your mind.
But when life reminds you that some things are beyond your control, don’t lose heart.
Place your trust in the One who not only made the garden…
…but also walks beside you through every season.
Reflection Questions:
1. Am I caring for the body, mind, and spirit God has entrusted to me?
2. Have I been trusting my own efforts more than God’s faithfulness?
3. Where is God inviting me to surrender what I cannot control?
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for entrusting me with this life. Help me to be a faithful steward of the body, mind, and spirit You have given me. Give me wisdom to make choices that cultivate health, peace, and spiritual growth. But when storms come despite my best efforts, remind me that my hope is never found in my routines or my strength. It is found in You alone. Help me to trust the Gardener when I cannot understand the season. Strengthen my roots so that my faith remains firm through sunshine and storm alike. May my life always bear fruit that brings glory to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
