“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 NIV
Have you ever noticed how much your feet hurt when you first start walking barefoot?
Every little pebble feels sharp. Twigs make you stop in your tracks, and even a gravel driveway seems impossible to cross. Your feet are simply too sensitive because they’ve been protected by shoes.
But something interesting happens if you keep walking.
Day after day, your feet become stronger.
The ground hasn’t changed.
The rocks are still there.
The gravel is just as rough as it was before.
The difference is you.
Your feet develop calluses that allow you to walk where you couldn’t before.
The other day I realized our walk with Christ can be a lot like that.
When our faith is immature—or when we’re trying to walk through life apart from God—we’re often controlled by our feelings. Every criticism feels personal. Every inconvenience ruins our day. Every opinion has the power to offend us or pull us in a different direction.
We’re spiritually sensitive because we haven’t yet learned to stand firmly on God’s truth.
As we spend time reading Scripture, praying, and trusting the Lord through life’s challenges, He begins to strengthen us.
Our hearts become rooted in His Word instead of our emotions.
We still experience disappointment.
We still feel hurt.
We still face criticism and trials.
But those things no longer determine how we respond.
Instead of reacting emotionally to every stone in our path, we learn to walk forward with wisdom, patience, and peace.
The world hasn’t become any softer.
God has simply made us stronger.
Every trial becomes another step that strengthens our faith. Every difficult conversation becomes another opportunity to respond with grace. Every season of waiting teaches us to trust Him a little more.
Just like walking barefoot, spiritual maturity doesn’t happen overnight.
It comes one step at a time.
And before long, you’ll find yourself walking through places that once seemed impossible—not because the path changed, but because Christ changed you.
Reflection Questions:
1. Am I allowing my emotions or God’s truth to guide my responses?
2. What “rough path” has God been using to strengthen my faith?
3.How can I spend more time renewing my mind with God’s Word this week?
Heavenly Father,
thank You for patiently strengthening my faith one step at a time. Help me to build my life on Your truth instead of my changing emotions. When I face criticism, disappointment, or difficult seasons, remind me that You are using those moments to make me more like Christ. Renew my mind, strengthen my heart, and help me continue walking faithfully wherever You lead.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
