“When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” — Psalm 61:2 (KJV)
You can love God with all your heart and still have days when life feels like more than you can carry.
You can believe in His promises and still cry over circumstances you don’t understand. You can pray faithfully and still feel anxious when another bill arrives, another health problem appears, or another disappointment leaves you wondering what comes next.
Struggling doesn’t mean your faith is fake.
Sometimes we place an extra burden on ourselves by believing that strong faith should always look peaceful. We think we should have an encouraging answer, a grateful attitude, and enough strength to keep going without falling apart.
Then, when we feel overwhelmed, we begin questioning ourselves.
If I really trust God, why am I so worried? Why am I this tired? Why can’t I just pull myself together?
But Scripture gives us room to be honest.
In Psalm 61, David cried out to God from an overwhelmed heart. He didn’t wait until he felt composed to pray. He brought his weakness to the One who could steady him.
Elijah had seen God work powerfully, yet in 1 Kings 19, he became afraid, exhausted, and deeply discouraged. God’s care included food, rest, and His presence. That account reminds me how tenderly God can meet us when our strength is gone.
Even Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, expressed deep sorrow. He prayed honestly to His Father and asked His disciples to stay near Him. His anguish was real, and so was His obedience.
We don’t have to hide our pain to prove that we love God.
There are days when my prayer is simply, “Lord, please help me get through today.” I may not have the words to explain everything weighing on my heart, but I can still turn toward Him.
Perhaps you know that feeling too.
You’re trying to care for your family, manage your responsibilities, and remain hopeful. Meanwhile, worries keep piling up, and you wonder how much longer you can keep carrying them.
God sees the weight you’re under. You can bring Him the thoughts you’re afraid to say aloud. You can tell Him you’re tired, disappointed, frightened, or unsure.
Then allow yourself to receive care. Rest when you need to. Ask someone trustworthy to pray with you. Accept practical help. Seeking support is compatible with trusting God; you were never asked to be without needs.
Faith can look like reaching for God while your hands are shaking.
Today, you don’t have to solve every problem waiting in tomorrow. Begin with the next small step: an honest prayer, a needed conversation, a moment of rest, or the responsibility directly in front of you.
Your feelings may take time to settle. Your circumstances may take time to change. Through it all, you can keep coming to God exactly as you are.
The overwhelmed heart that reaches for Him is still a heart of faith.
Reflection Questions
1. What is weighing most heavily on your heart today, and what would it look like to bring it honestly to God?
2. When you feel overwhelmed, do you judge yourself for struggling? How could the examples of David and Elijah help you respond to yourself with grace?
3. What is one small step you can take today to receive care—whether through rest, prayer, or asking someone trustworthy for help?
Prayer
Father, You know what is weighing on me today. Help me stop hiding my struggles or treating them as proof that I have failed You. Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. Give me strength for the next step, courage to ask for help, and grace to rest. Teach me to trust Your love even when I feel overwhelmed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
